Ethics, accountability & transparency presentation to the Forestry Department
15/06/2012
TI Fiji recently enjoyed the opportunity to present to serving officers of the forestry department as part of their week-long training session at Colo-i-Suva. TI FIji was invited to present on the topic of "Ethics, accountability and transparency".
It was TI Fiji's first engagement with the Forestry Department, and for audience members it was generally the first time they had heard about TI Fiji, resulting in a strong two-way flow of information.
TI Fiji's presentation introduced the themes of ethics, accountability and transparency, the relevance of these themes to the forestry sector, a PNG forestry sector case study on illegal logging, and work being undertaken by TI Malaysia on an online tool for members of the public to report suspicious forestry activity (the Voluntary Forest Monitors Programme).
Some members of the audience were very interested in the TI Malaysia forestry watch initiative and asked about TI Fiji’s capacity to set up a similar online tool here. It was agreed that as an empowerment tool for local land owners it would be quite powerful in Fiji.
